I must say that the name ‘Avengers’ perfectly fits a team of superheroes. But let’s dig a little deeper into this name. What does it actually mean? And is this name even original?
Back in 1963, when The Avengers #1 came out, Janet Van Dyne (A.K.A The Wasp) came up with the world-famous name. She said, and I quote,
That’s right! We need a name! It should be something colourful and dramatic, like… the Avengers!
And so, the Avengers were born, and they now also had a pretty nifty name. But seriously, though, what does the name even mean? According to the dictionary, an avenger is someone who mightvengeance
But why would they call themselves The Avengers? Their first adventure, after which the name was created, was just simply taking down Loki and kicking his ass. They didn’t avenge anyone. Here’s what I think: To avenge someone is to do something good, something full of honour. These heroes vow to only act if their actions are full of honour, so they call themselves the Avengers.
But in that case, why couldn’t they just have called themselves The Winners, The Victors or something else that sound a little bit jollier, since avenging someone means that someone must have died. However, avenging someone isn’t that sad moment of somebody passing away, but that happy moment of when they have avenged that person. And these heroes are very well-known for always being able to make the best of a bad situation.
So, okay. I guess that The Avengers is a pretty cool name. But is this name even original? Well… nothing is really original, to be honest. There was a movie in 1950 (13 years before the first Avengers comic came out) which was in fact called The Avengers but it had absolutely nothing to do with the superheroes. The movie was just some crappy murder mystery directed by some John H. Auer.
So, no, The Avengers isn’t exactly the world’s most original name. But who gives a damn? As I said, there is nothing on Earth that is fully original!BTW, please don’t forget to leave some questions as comments below this post or as e-mails to email@example.com.
