Alfie Slider versus the Shapeshifter – Book Review!

This is a fantastic book that all younger readers will enjoy. It has everything from a protagonist that everybody can identify with to a mysterious antagonist. Also, this review will not spoil the plot of the book at all. So, you can safely proceed.

Here’s the blurb:

Some people say that Alfie Slider is a bit weird, but he thinks that weird just means different. Weird is good! Living with his ‘different’ family is never predictable for Alfie, but nothing could prepare him for what happens when he finds a strange key on his way home from school. This is no ordinary key – it seems to break the laws of physics! Once he’s figured out how to use it, Alfie is caught up in adventures that are literally out of this world. This story has evil grannies, flame-throwing frogs, bossy computers, shape-shifting aliens, huge explosions, best friends and parallel universes. In other words, it’s a bit weird…but weird just means different!

Straight off the bat, I want to thank the author, Sarah Dixon, for sending me an early copy of the book. But, of course, everything in this review is still 100% my own opinion.

Like many traditional kids’ stories, it starts off with a rather lonely kid who isn’t very popular at school. However, unlike traditional kids’ stories, it goes in a very sci-fi direction when Alfie finds a spaceship and makes friends with an artificial intelligence! This kick starts the whole story and it perfectly shows the difference between how a child would think and how an adult would think in this situation. Alfie Slider doesn’t want the authorities to get their hands on his new spaceship. He doesn’t turn off the AI. No, instead he has consisted conversations with it and gives it a fun name.

However, Alfie soon realises that there is a shape-shifting alien also trying to get his hands on the spaceship. Of course, Alfie has no shape-shifting powers of his own, so he must out-smart the alien.

But, the story doesn`t end when the book ends. It’s concluded nicely by wrapping up the plot of this first book, but teasing the next book in the series. I`d recommend this book to any young readers. It`s funny, exciting and full of suspense when it needs to be.

I want to thank Sarah Dixon once again for providing me with the book. Of course, if you guys don`t believe me, you don`t have to take my word for it about how great this book is.
