In my last post (which I consider one of my best posts to date), I explained the whole embargo that MARVEL has on X-men characters in their video games. You should probably check out that post before reading this one, but it’s all completely up to you! I honestly don’t give a crap!
Straight off the bat, I just want to say that I will be trying to look at both sides here. Obviously, MARVEL is a company that needs to make money. I can’t just say MARVEL should start releasing 10 movies a year, each with a budget of half-a-billion dollars, shot in Imax and they should release those movies for free! Of course, they cannot do that. As rich as MARVEL is, their primary goal is to make money. But, with all honesty, I don’t think that it’s okay for them to make crappy entertainment and trick people into buying their products. Man, I can already tell this is going to be one hell of an exhausting post!
First of all, let’s look at what we, the consumers, are losing out on due to this embargo. Well, obviously we cannot have our favourite X-men characters appear in original video games. Imagine how awesome it would be if we could have a game where you can play as all those X-men characters and fight Magneto and sentinels! Or imagine a TellTale game where you are Logan and you need to choose wisely who you trust. Or, you know what? You could go crazy and pitch an X-clusively (pun intended) X-men LEGO game!
Now, let’s look at what we gain as the consumers, thanks to this embargo. Well, we are getting several steps closer to having the X-men in the MCU. I mean, what’s the first thing you’d want to do after playing through a really good X-men game? Well, watch all of the X-men movies, of course! Thanks to this embargo, we still get to have MARVEL video games, and we’re getting closer and closer to an Avengers/X-men on-screen crossover! How awesome would it be to have the entire AvX storyline on-screen? And also, once MARVEL does get the rights back, we can have as many X-men games as we bloody want!
Well, the thing is, though, that if MARVEL do everything they possibly can to avoid promoting the X-men, will the X-men still be popular once the rights come back to MARVEL? And, the even better question, will MARVEL be able to really deliver and give us the crossover that fans have been begging for, almost for a decade?
But, then again, to be fair, this embargo isn’t too strict. I mean, they’re still adding X-men characters to Contest of Champions. The thing that most people are afraid of is that MARVEL vs Capcom: Infinite will be the first MARVEL vs Capcom game not to have X-men characters. But, no! Of course, MARVEL have refused to use the X-men in the main marketing for the game, but they have indeed promised that there will be DLC with the X-men. I know everybody hates to pay extra money for DLC, but if this is the little sacrifice we need to make to be able to have an Avengers/X-men on-screen crossover, then why the hell no?
So, where do I stand on this topic? Well, at the beginning I was 100% against it. But then, as I sat down to write this post, I thought more and more about it and I, eventually, realised that I really don’t mind it as it is. As long as they do give us X-men DLC in MvC: Infinite and they do keep adding X-men to MCoC, then I really don’t mind it at all! The only thing that this embargo really does is that it stops the X-men from having a game centred around them or where they are crucial characters. That’s it.
Let me know what you guys think about this embargo in the comments! I’d love to hear your thoughts and have a little discussion about it.
